9 June E54 NORDKAPP Part 1

When we planned our trip to Norway back in early January the master plan all along was to get to Nordkapp (Knivskjelodden actually).

TODAY WE ACCOMPLISHED OUR GOAL!

What we had NOT reckoned on however, was the massive amount of snow still remaining from winter!  So we ‘booted and suited’ and set off on the 9km walk to the Knivskjelodden trig point (the most Northerly point on mainland Europe)

The trail is fairly well marked by Cairns along the way and starts at approx 1000ft above sea level

One of the many ‘hazards’ we had to negotiate

The snow was perhaps 2 or 3 metres deep in places but well packed

And THIS is the marker point!  Here at last!  It took us 2 and a half hours of non stop walking, sometimes through water deeper than our boots (and ice cold too!).  We had a nice brew using our Swedish Trangia camping stove, we felt like proper Arctic explorers!!

On the side of the Trig marker is the name and the ‘Northing’……..71 degrees, 11 minutes and 8 seconds North

Really?  What did you expect?  At this stage an ‘Arctic Phoon’ was mandatory!

The two happy explorers as they prepare for the long slog back to base camp…….
